2NINER Athletes focus on Youth Worlds

2NINER skipper, Charlotte Leigh (Miami, FL) and teammate Sophie Fisher (Newport, RI) were the top girls 29er team at the 2021 US Nationals this past June. In addition to being the most attended and competitive 29er regatta stateside since the start of the pandemic, the event also serves as a qualifier for the 2021 Youth World Championships in Oman this year.

Charlotte has been racing the 29er since 2017, after her success in the Optimist class (2017 Optimist Team Race World Champion - 1st). Notable career highlights include 2nd place 29er Nationals 2018, 2nd place at Open Orange Bowl 2018.

Skipper Sophie Fisher won the 2020 Open Orange Bowl Regatta this past year in Miami has joined forces with Charlie and taken up the challenge of crewing the 29er, which demands a new level of fitness and agility.

This year, Charlotte and Sophie, who had been battling one another on the race course with their own respective teammates for the past three years, campaigned for an opportunity to win the girls YW spot. With great success they finished 3rd overall at both Skiff Generation and 29er Nationals this June.

What is the Youth World Championship?

The Youth World Championship is the most competitive youth event in sailing, compared to the Olympics for sailors under19 years old, wherein one male and female from each nation compete against one another in a weeklong format. The 29er class has been one of five classes represented at the Youth World Championship since 2001.

Head Coach of the Youth Worlds Team is 2NINER’s own, Phil Muller. This will be our coach’s third consecutive year coaching at this prestigious event and first year as Head Coach of the team for all classes. Read about 2NINER team’s Gold and Silver medals at the Youth World Championships.
