New Squad

This past April we did something a little different. We ventured out of Miami. Partnering with a group of committed sailors from Jensen Beach, 2NINER hosted a Girls Spring Skiff Series at the US Sailing Center Martin County. IMG_1936This flat water, sea-breeze driven venue offered the ideal training grounds to introduce skiff sailing to sailors who were ready to take it to the next level. The challenge of the 29er is unparalleled in junior sailing world, the combination of physical fitness and high stakes tactical decision making is a great jumping point into performance racing.IMG_1882How'd we do it? With a combination of leadership and planning 2NINER was able to coach and kick off the first weekend of the 4 week clinic dates off and get the group on a solid foundation for rigging, technique, and boat handling. Then we passed the torch to local parents and coaches, with remote guidance for drills and technical information we gave the local crew in Jensen the tools to get in the boats and learn. We had a lot of fun. But for me, the impact of our efforts must go beyond simple thrill. Top three takeaways from our Skiff Series Survey from the sailors who participated:[gallery ids="1182,1181,1180" type="rectangular" orderby="rand"]

  1. Trust: Trust in a partner is the most important thing. Even if you're sailing with them for the first time. Body weight is so important in the 29er, that everything you do, or don't do, balances the boat.
  2. Teamwork: Good communication and having the same objective keeps you upright.
  3. Motivation: "I can't wait to start racing!"

We're looking forward to what's ahead for this group of new 29er sailors.
